the19thcenturyandusedextensivelyacrossEuropeandlater
NorthAmerica,AustraliaandNorthAfrica.Manyballadswere
writtenandsoldassinglesheetbroadsides.Theformwasoften
usedbypoetsandcomposersfromthe18thcenturyonwardsto
producelyricalballads.Inthelater19thcenturyittookon
themeaningofaslowformofpopularlovesongandthetermis
nowoftenusedassynonymouswithanylovesong,particularly
thepoporrockpowerballad.
